Went today to the illegal protests and watched as Hong Kong protesters threw back pepper spray and tear gas launched by police at Legco, while launching their own Molotov cocktails. Why, oh why, has Hong Kong come to this? The protestors and police shouldn't be fighting like this--they are both Hong Kong people whom in other contexts would get along well enough as fellow citizens, which they are. The problem is the Hong Kong government, which has completely abdicated its representation of Hong Kong. Carrie Lam is wholly invisible, not even a puppet. Today, Hong Kong is dictated to by Xi Jinping. And so, of course Hong Kong people will resist. This is so tragic, because with better government--with Hong Kong leaders representing Hong Kong rather than only mainland China--one country two systems could have worked. My home is destroying itself and I am in tears as I write this.
