陶傑先生在Hong Kong Magazine撰了篇鴻文，遭許多網民讀者指摘，今天連華文報章紛紛將事件刊載，聲稱侮辱菲律賓人的感情云云。為查看事件虚實，必須拿出以下原文審度：

The War At Home
March 27th, 2009

The Russians sank a Hong Kong freighter last month, killing the seven Chinese seamen on board. We can live with that—Lenin and Stalin were once the ideological mentors of all Chinese people. The Japanese planted a flag on Diàoyú Island. That’s no big problem—we Hong Kong Chinese love Japanese cartoons, Hello Kitty, and shopping in Shinjuku, let alone our round-the-clock obsession with karaoke.

But hold on—even the Filipinos? Manila has just claimed sovereignty over the scattered rocks in the South China Sea called the Spratly Islands, complete with a blatant threat from its congress to send gunboats to the South China Sea to defend the islands from China if necessary. This is beyond reproach. The reason: there are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as $3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong. As a nation of servants, you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.

As a patriotic Chinese man, the news has made my blood boil. I summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture. I sternly warned her that if she wants her wages increased next year, she had better tell every one of her compatriots in Statue Square on Sunday that the entirety of the Spratly Islands belongs to China.

Grimly, I told her that if war breaks out between the Philippines and China, I would have to end her employment and send her straight home, because I would not risk the crime of treason for sponsoring an enemy of the state by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day. With that money, she would pay taxes to her government, and they would fund a navy to invade our motherland and deeply hurt my feelings.

Oh yes. The government of the Philippines would certainly be wrong if they think we Chinese are prepared to swallow their insult and sit back and lose a Falkland Islands War in the Far East. They may have Barack Obama and the hawkish American military behind them, but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher. Some of my friends told me they have already declared a state of emergency at home. Their maids have been made to shout “China, Madam/Sir” loudly whenever they hear the word “Spratly.” They say the indoctrination is working as wonderfully as when we used to shout, “Long live Chairman Mao!” at the sight of a portrait of our Great Leader during the Cultural Revolution. I’m not sure if that’s going a bit too far, at least for the time being.

國際關係是這樣的一個遊戲法則，中文有句俗語叫做「形勢比人強」，哪一個國家強大，哪一個國家就有發聲權；粵語又有所謂「財大氣粗」的說法。中國人既然富起來了，站起來，吐了氣，揚了眉，氣也必須要粗一點，像充了氣的球棒，剛健堅硬，孔武有力，要威而鋼，拍拍有聲，才對得起「大國」體統。相體裁衣，就是比喻根據實際情況處理事情。邦人在海外隨地吐痰，喧嘩喪叫，脫鞋乘涼，爭先恐後，強佔座位，這是國情。不過打從2006年起，中國出境人數達3452萬人次，已成為亞洲不折不扣的第一大旅客輸出國。即使是暴民，富起來還是富起來了，拿起一疊錢鈔，就有發聲權。高聲說話，是因為有錢有財，其他國家的人種就要遷就配合。弄污了廁坑，車站一地痰花，你要給我抹乾淨。現在是外國人有求於中國的時候了，中國擺起了姿態，是自然不過的事情。有誰不滿意的話，例如批評中國的種種不是，就是說三道四、干擾內政、分裂國家、叛國賣國。今天五族融和，「漢奸」一名早已不合時宜，但指罵中國的人，或者在大學裡穿起和服拍照，仍然需要被冠以「漢奸」惡名。

陶傑先生要諷刺的，大概是上面所說的一種強橫奪理、我行我素、盲目推崇「愛國」的大中國想法。中國很大，中國的經濟規模很大，機場很大，酒店很大，但光是大是是沒有中用的。十三億人之中，有許多人仍然生活在水深火熱之中，有許多人被箝制言論自由，有許多愚昧的人甚至認為箝制言論和宗教自由、沒有民主法治監察政府才符合經濟發展的需要。"The War At Home" 的立意，大抵是一份內省態度，站在中國的土地上，恥笑中國自身。如果認為中國的確有上面所指出的問題，認為中國人很霸道，你應該會認同陶傑先生所說的話，而不是前去箝制他刊登出版的自由。反對Hong Kong Magazine這篇專欄的人，其實是不懂理解文章裡正言若反的弦外之音。說到底，是一個閱讀理解根底不足的語言問題。

意大利/ 義大利

意大利是一個很有個性的國家，無論是其悠長的歷史、宏偉的建築物、別具風格的飲食，文字和詞彙，都在歐洲以至全世界舉足輕重，獨當一面。與我們日常生活息息相關的，莫過於西曆的七月和八月。眾所周知，July和August的由來，是羅馬昔日兩位叱吒風雲的凱撒Julius Caesar（出生於七月）和Augustus（羅馬帝國第一位君主）。順帶一提，「七月」的確別具意義，首先，七月有一個特性，就是常年七月和四月都是同一天開始的，例如四月一日如果是星期三，那麼七月一日也是星期三。如果該年是閏年的話，七月則和一月在同一天開始。除此之外，許多國家和地方的成立日、紀念日和獨立日等都和七月連上關係。香港人大概只記得七月一日是甚麼日子，要有多一點國際視野，目光不可以那麼狹窄。七月一日，同樣是加拿大的國慶節;白俄羅斯(Belarus)、美國和馬爾代夫(Maldives)也是在這個月份宣告成立的。

羅馬對世界的影響非常大，許多語系的拼寫方式都是以羅馬字母為基礎的，就連漢語拼音、粵語拼音都離不開羅馬的熏陶。另一方面，羅馬數字也是迷人的，手表上的羅馬時刻、立法會大樓上刻著的羅馬年份，都有一份深沉的歲月烙印。



想起羅馬，實在有太多使人神往的名字，古羅馬廢墟(Roman Forum)、萬神殿(Pantheon)、許願池(Fontana di Trevi)、鬥獸場(Colosseo)、納沃那廣場(Piazza Navona)，處處都有說不完的歷史故事。

對大多數人來說，意大利的食物最感到熟悉，所以實在不用多說，但有份量，有水準而且價錢相宜的意大利餐廳，在香港只可以屈指可數。尖東有一間稱得上是典範了。食材沒有欺場，餐具都是精心挑選的，拿起用銀造的餐具，有一份質實的重量感；用餐後來一杯Cappucino的韻味已經足夠繞樑三日。餐廳的佈置上至天花板，窗戶以至窗戶外的花叢，最別具心裁。



這間餐廳在全世界只有三間，總店在羅馬，兩間分店在東京和香港開設。香港彈丸之地，食客有如此口福，前世修行也乎！



意大利的吸引力當然不止於以上這些，讓人迷戀的，還有足球和皮具。華文世界裡，Italy有兩個名字，台灣人稱Repubblica Italiana為「義大利共和國」，正好給Italy增添一重感性的「意義」。無奈香港人與這個國度有一牆隔閡，記得佛羅倫薩美術學院畫廊內的《大衛》像在香港展出時，當局以不雅為由，要藝術珍品多穿一件衣服，分明是對意大利藝術的最大侮辱！真所謂「夏蟲不可語冰」，這是身為香港人的遺憾。
